#3 Everyday Life at Skiathos Dog Shelter
First of all no two
days are the same at the Skiathos Dog Shelter. Each day offers both new
experiences as well as challenges, whether this regards new dogs, adoptions,
dog’s health care etc. The day begins around 8 where the feeding of the shelter’s
dogs and cats commence, then the cleaning of the pens and various other work
follows. At 9 the first tourists come by to visit and walk the dogs as there is also a great path with amazing views.

This
continues until 1 o’clock where the dogs need to be fed again. Of course this
is a very rough description of the day, as a lot of work goes on in between all
of this, e.g. socializing some of the more shy or traumatized dogs. One of
these dogs is Beano. Beano has been at the shelter a few years now. He gets
along perfectly fine with the dogs he shares his pen with, but unfortunately
this is not the case when it comes to people. When we first arrived at the
Shelter he would not stop barking at us, and we could not get near him without
him running frightened away. Though we have not gained his complete trust yet,
we have managed to come to an understanding; the barking has stopped, he is
more interested in us when we spend time in his pen. Now we have even been able
to sit down and pet and brush him. We are certain that if we had had even more
time in Skiathos and could have sat down with him everyday that even more
progress could be achieved.
(Maybe even similar to Mr. Roly Poly’s story, which
will follow later on.)
If you happen to be here on a Wednesday the day involves
a great Pub Quiz at the Iguana bar hosted by the lovely Chris & Adrian.
This quiz raises a lot of money for the Shelter each week and is of course a
lot of fun for everyone!
